OK if you haven't heard the news, read this bit of news:

The point is, disrespect and thoughtlessness have become the common theme for the holiday shopping experience. This wasn't a death out of violence or anger, it was a death because people simply didn't care. Not one or ten people, but hundreds of people. And above and beyond them, there are a lot of rude shoppers out there who will lie, steal, play dumb about the meaning of a sale, and cause a scene just for a discount. This isn't what the holidays are about: how can you call yourself human if you can't act like one while performing the very simple act of SHOPPING? It's not rocket science, just behave yourself, don't be a friggin' monkey.

Anyway here's the plan: make a nametag. Make it however you like - design and print on or just scribble it on paper and tape it to your shoulder. Write "Peaceful Shopping Commitment" and/or "Jdimytai Damour." (The name of the man who was killed - he worked to help provide a good deal for consumers and instead of saying thanks, they killed him. Really think about what this means in our society, and the changes we have to make here and now.)

Wear this nametag whenever you go out shopping between now and 2009. Spread the word: write in message boards about it, email your friends, blog about it. Tell your coworkers. It takes a SYMBOL to really implement change, and this is that symbol.

By wearing this tag we are honoring Damour's death by maintaining a promise to shop in a civilized, friendly, peaceful manner. We all want a good deal but we will keep things in perspective and understand sales aren't everything in life. We won't throw temper tantrums or join a mob mentality over something as petty as a coupon we may have not read the fine print on. We'll do our best to have an honest and respectful shopping experience so that our holiday gifts are not tainted with negativity.

Is this making sense to anyone? Will you do it? Are you bold enough to really get involved in stopping this, rather than just ranting about it? Because I'm done ranting; words are getting us nowhere. Let's express ourselves with this promise and see where it takes us between now and 2009.

If you've ever worked in retail, then you should certainly understand and wear a nametag this holiday shopping season.

(I'm not sure if I'm categorizing this correctly, but then, I'm never sure if I'm categorizing anything correctly.)
